Tatu Rei is an exciting 5 piece band playing original music in a variety of Brazilian styles, plus interpretations of songs from the Brazilian popular music canon. The talented members of Tatu Rei are able to draw upon a wealth of training and experience in many different types of music.
David Chong is the vocalist and founder of the group. David was formerly soloist with the Brazilian vocal ensemble Borboleta and has sung with guitarist Doug de Vries. David grew up in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, where he trained in classical and modern dance. David has collaborated with John Moore in writing original compositions for Tatu Rei.
Lawrence Folvig is a graduated from VCA with a bachelor of Performance (Improvisation). Lawrence composes for Tatu Rei and has also written music for his other projects. He is member to several Jazz and improvisational groups.
John Moore has played percussion in Latin and Brazilian groups in Melbourne since living in Brazil during the late 80’s, including salsa dance bands and the Melbourne Samba School. John studied atabaque and pandeiro in Bahia, Brazil, then congas in Melbourne with Ray Pereira. John writes original music for Tatu Rei and has also made some of the percussion instruments used by the band.
Neda Rahmani is a percussionist who has played in Latin and percussion groups such as Tumbarumba and Bomba since graduating from Victoria University. Neda regards Brazil as her most important musical influence, and lived in Brazil to further her musical studies.
Tom Morgan is a graduate of Bachelor of Music Performance(Improvisation) at the VCA. Tom plays trumpet as well as acoustic and electric bass. His musical interest and experience prior to joining Tatu Rei have been predominantly in the area of Jazz
